A day at the park with your child is usually filled with laughter, fun and the joy of outdoor play. Dogs are often part of a park’s landscape, and while most interactions are friendly, there can be unfortunate instances when a dog bite occurs.

A dog bite can be a traumatic experience for your child, so knowing what to do in this situation is essential. Acting promptly and taking the right steps can help ensure your child’s well-being and recovery.

1. Prioritize immediate medical care

The first thing you need to do is ensure your child gets immediate medical attention. Clean the wound with warm water and soap if you can, but do not delay seeking professional help. Depending on the severity of the bite, you might need to call 911 or take your child to the nearest emergency room. Prompt medical attention can help prevent infection and address any serious injuries.

2. Identify the dog and its owner

If possible, try to identify the dog that bit your child and find its owner. You need to know if the dog is up-to-date on vaccinations, especially for rabies. Ask the owner for their contact information and the dog’s veterinary records. You will need this information if the owner is liable and you decide to press charges.

If the owner is not present or you cannot find them, and if it is safe to do so, take a picture of the dog for identification.

3. Report the incident

Report the dog bite to the local animal control or non-emergency police line. Provide them with all the details of the incident, including the dog’s description and the owner’s information if available. This step is necessary for public safety.

Your calm and informed response can make all the difference in ensuring your child’s swift recovery from the dog bite and preventing such incidents from happening again in the future.
